Do breastfed babies need probiotics?
Parenting FAQs
Breast milk naturally contains beneficial bacteria that support a baby's gut health. Additionally, breast milk provides unique food for these healthy bacteria called human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), as well as an ideal balance of nutrients and antibodies that continue to promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. However, there may be certain circumstances where probiotics are recommended for breastfed babies, such as if the baby has specific health conditions (e.g. Colic) or has been on antibiotics. If you are unsure which probiotic is right for your baby, talk to your healthcare professional for personalised advice.
