What’s the link between antibiotics and gut health for my baby?
Parenting FAQs
Your baby has beneficial, or “friendly”, bacteria in their gut, but also “bad” bacteria. The balance between these two is important for healthy digestive and immune systems. Antibiotics can disrupt your baby’s developing gut microbiota, also called gut flora — the microorganisms that live in the digestive tract. This happens because antibiotics eliminate any pathogenic or bad bacteria, but also good bacteria.
