Tofu Nuggets Recipe
- Preheat oven to 220°C /200°C fan forced. Grease and line a baking tray with baking paper.
- Remove the tofu from the package and place onto a paper towel-lined plate or chopping board. Top with a second towel and a second plate or chopping board. Let sit for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours (this will absorb extra moisture). Meanwhile in a shallow dish or pie plate, combine panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder and NAN Toddler Milk Drink powder; set aside.
- Cut tofu into 1.5cm thick slices, then cut slices into 2cm x 4cm long pieces. Break the egg into another shallow dish and beat lightly, dredge the tofu cubes in egg, then the panko mixture, and place on the prepared tray. Spray lightly with nonstick spray.
- Bake for 16-18 minutes or until completely cooked through and lightly golden brown. Alternatively, cook nuggets in an air fryer at 180°C for 13-15 minutes. Serve with Greek yoghurt as a dipping sauce.
Tofu Nuggets FAQs
Are tofu nuggets a good option for a vegetarian meal?
Yes, tofu nuggets are an excellent option for vegetarians! Made from plant-based ingredients, these tofu veg nuggets offer a healthy, protein-packed alternative to meat-based nuggets. They’re perfect for little ones or the adults in the family looking for a tasty, meat-free snack or meal. Just make sure to swap the Toddler Milk with a plant-based milk alternative like soy or almond.
What is the best tofu for a baked tofu recipe?
For the best baked tofu nuggets, use extra firm tofu. This variety holds its shape well and gives you a firmer, crispier nugget once baked. Be sure to remove extra moisture from the tofu by placing between two paper towels and leaving it for up to 2 hours before coating and baking.
Will my little ones like tofu?
We hope so! Tofu Nuggets are a great way to introduce tofu and soy to kids, due to its flavoursome crumb and fairly neutral flavour. If your kids enjoy chicken nuggets, what’s not to say they won’t enjoy this plant-based version?
What dipping sauce should I serve with these tofu nuggets?
That choice is entirely up to you and your family’s preferences. You can go classic with a salt-reduced tomato sauce or smoky barbeque, or you can make your own aioli for something more on the creamy side.
Can other types of tofu be used in this recipe?
It is possible to use other forms of tofu, however, firm tofu is recommended as it works best to keep its form in the crumbing and baking stages.
Can I use a cornflake crumb on these tofu nuggets?
If you and your family like your nuggets extra crunchy, a cornflake crumb can give your recipe an extra crunch! Crush up or process cornflakes into a crunchy crumb and use in place of the panko crumb for the crunchiest nuggets yet!
